At the time of pre-op consultation, the patient should freely ask questions and clear all their concerns and doubts. They should ideally prepare a list of questions they want to ask and carry to the surgeon’s office.

A responsible surgeon will answer the patient’s questions in a detailed manner and explain the pros and cons of the surgery in a patient-friendly language. Important Questions to Ask

  • Will I make a good candidate for ear reshaping surgery?
  • What surgical technique would you recommend in my case to perform otoplasty?
  • Will you use general or local anesthesia for my procedure?
  • Where would the incisions be placed, and will it cause subsequent scarring?
  • Is there anything I need to do in terms of preparation for the cosmetic surgery?
  • Is the post-op recovery going to be long and painful?
  • Are there any risks and side effects that I should be aware of?
  • Can I have access to otoplasty before and after photos?
  • Is your practice equipped to handle an emergency situation during surgery or recovery?
  • Once the surgery is completed, is it possible to alter the appearance of ears again in the future?

What preparation is required from my end for otoplasty?

The surgeon will give detailed preparatory instructions after determining the patient’s candidacy for otoplasty. Some simple do’s and don’ts will have to be followed, such as refraining from smoking and avoid certain types of medications for a few days.

How visible will be the scarring after ear surgery?

The surgeon will choose discreet locations for incisions, such as the back of the ear where it connects to the head, or within the ear’s inner folds. This will allow for minimal obvious scarring. But scarring can vary from one patient to another depending on the extent of surgery involved.

How will the otoplasty procedure be performed?

If the patient is a child, the ear cartilage will be soft, and splints can be used to create new ear contours. The procedure on a child will usually be performed using general anesthesia. On the other hand, an adult’s cartilage is hard, and the otoplasty procedure may involve repositioning or removal of the cartilage after making a small incision in the ear.

What can I expect on the day of the surgery?

Otoplasty will be typically performed as an outpatient procedure. The patient should have someone to drive them back home after the surgery. The procedure is usually completed in one to two hours. Experienced, driven, and stellar plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for otoplasty.

Preparing for Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) | Beverly Hills Plastic SurgeryBefore the scheduled date of ear reshaping cosmetic surgery or otoplasty, the surgeon will provide detailed instructions for preparation to the patient.

Appropriate and poignant preparation will create the foundation for a successful surgery. The surgeon will perform a general health exam, ask questions about the patient’s current health, review their past medical records, and address any doubts or concerns that the patient may have.

If the surgeon feels that the patient should undergo certain pre-surgery tests, these will be scheduled well ahead of the otoplasty procedure. Dr. Eugene Kim is a marvelous, successful, and board certified plastic surgeon providing otoplasty and other procedures to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.

Weeks before Otoplasty

The surgeon will instruct the patient to temporarily stop the use of blood thinning medications, NSAIDs, and certain vitamins and herbal supplements in the weeks preceding the procedure. If the patient is a child, the surgeon with the assistance of parents or guardians of the child will ensure that appropriate communication is done with the child about otoplasty cosmetic surgery.

The parents should inform the child’s school in advance because the child may have to miss school for a few days after the surgery. Otoplasty before and after photos will be presented, for both adults and children, to help them develop realistic expectations. If the patient has a habit of smoking, they will be required to quit the habit at least for a few weeks before the surgery. The patient should also arrange for aftercare for a few days, if necessary.

A Day before the Surgery

In case otoplasty is to be performed with the patient under general anesthesia, they will be instructed to avoid eating or drinking for eight hours before the surgery. Preparations should be made for the recovery phase, such as applying for a week’s leave at the workplace and arranging for someone responsible to drive the patient home after the surgery.

The patient may also keep necessary items at home in advance such as gauze bandage, pain relievers, ice packs, and extra pillows. Profound and reliable plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other areas in this part of the country for otoplasty.

The Day of Surgery

On the day of the ear reshaping surgery, the patient should wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes to the surgery center. They should avoid wearing any restrictive shirts or collars that may have to be pulled over the head. Special care should be taken in case of kids to ensure that nothing bends or pulls at the ears once the surgery is over.

The patient should wash hair thoroughly on the morning of the surgery. Men may have a haircut prior to the surgery, while women may pin or braid their hair. The patient should leave at home things such as jewelry, contact lenses and other accessories. Makeup should be avoided on the day of the surgery. Diabetics should have their vital parameters checked on the morning of the surgery.

Top Plastic Surgery Procedures for Women and Men | Beverly HillsAdvancements in surgical technology have made cosmetic surgery procedures safer, less complicated, and more affordable over the decades. Millions of invasive and non-invasive cosmetic procedures are performed in the US every year, providing an improved, youthful appearance to both women and men.

Some procedures over the years have emerged as more popular than others for a variety of reasons. Board certified and profound plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides various procedures for the breast, body and face to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities and cities across the horizon.

Growth of Plastic Surgery

According to the latest multi-specialty statistical report of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2016, Americans spent more than $15 billion on surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Compared to 2015, this spending represents a growth of 11 percent year on year.

Cosmetic surgery procedures accounted for about 56 percent of this spending, while the remaining 44 percent was spent on non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Ever since ASAPS instituted its annual Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics survey 20 years ago, the amount of $15 billion spent in 2016 is the largest ever.

ASAPS data reveals that a growing number of patients now want to receive more refined cosmetic procedures. For example, women now increasingly seek fat transfer breast augmentation to enhance breast size instead of traditional breast implants. Breast lift is also gaining more popularity as a subtle procedure compared to breast augmentation surgery.

However, in absolute terms, traditional breast implant surgery procedures have continued to grow too, particularly with the introduction of FDA approved ultra-cohesive silicone implants. Procedures such as vaginal rejuvenation, which were once considered niche, are now entering the mainstream. The rise in men’s procedures over the years has also been dramatic.

Top Five Procedures

According to the ASAPS figures for 2016, the top five most popular plastic surgery procedures for both women and men combined, include:

  • Liposuction – 414,335 procedures
  • Breast Augmentation – 310,444 procedures
  • Tummy Tuck – 181,540 procedures
  • Eyelid Surgery – 173,883 procedures
  • Breast Lift – 161,412 procedures

Liposuction

Liposuction has continued to rank among the top three cosmetic surgery procedures in the US for several years. More women and men now want enhanced body contours with liposuction surgery.

Breast Augmentation

Both traditional breast implant surgery and fat transfer breast augmentation are growing in popularity. High implant success rates due to improved qualities have added to the demand for this procedure.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck is the most effective and proven procedure to achieve a firmer and flatter abdomen. It can eliminate excess skin and fat, and tighten weak abdominal muscles to create youthful abdominal contours.

Eyelid Surgery

Both lower and upper eyelid surgeries are popular procedures, and in some cases, they are combined to achieve greater effect. The procedure can create an attractive upper face look with alert looking eyes and youthful eyelids.

Breast lift

Breast lift surgery is designed to firm up and raise the position of sagging breasts to a more youthful level. The procedure is often performed together with breast implants for a more enhanced breast appearance.

Your Ear Plastic Surgery Consultation | Beverly Hills | Santa MonicaIn any cosmetic surgery procedure such as ear reshaping, the pre-op consultation will play a vital role. At the time of consultation, the surgeon will explain all about the procedure, examine the patient’s ears and face, and recommend the best possible surgical technique and alternative treatments, if any. Determining the patient’s suitability for ear reshaping surgery will be the first concern of the surgeon.

Once the patient has been cleared for otoplasty, the surgeon will give them detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to prepare for the surgery as well as the recovery.

During the consultation, the patient will have the opportunity to ask questions and clarify any doubts or concerns. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides ear surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other cities in the Southern California region.

Patient’s Feedback

As a part of determining the patient’s candidacy, the surgeon will seek to understand during the consultation why the patient wants to receive otoplasty, and which aspects of the ears may be troubling them.

The surgeon will review the patient’s past medical records and ask them questions to assess their current health condition. The patient should disclose all relevant information about any underlying medical condition for their own safety.

Cosmetic Goals

At the time of pre-op consultation, it is important for the patient to freely share their innate cosmetic goals and needs with regard to the appearance of their ears and face. Once the surgeon clearly understands what the patient wants, they will be able to create a customized ear cosmetic surgery plan that it tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient, and ensure complete patient satisfaction.

Lifestyle Habits

If the patient has any specific lifestyle habits such as smoking, drinking or narcotic drugs, they should be forthcoming about such information before the surgeon. This will enable the surgeon to modify the surgical plan, suggest alternatives, or advise them to quit the habit for a certain minimum period of time before otoplasty procedure can be performed.

Current Medications

Prior to the consultation, the patient should ideally make a list of all the medications, including vitamins and herbal supplements, which they may be currently using. They should carry this list to the surgeon’s office for the consultation. The surgeon may adjust the schedules of some of these medications in consultation with the physician.

Questions to Ask

A committed surgeon will encourage the patient to ask questions and will provide detailed and accurate answers to clear all their doubts and concerns before proceeding with the ear reshaping surgery. Sagacious and terrific plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for otoplasty.

Developing Expectations

To help the patient form reasonable expectations from otoplasty, the surgeon may present ear surgery before and after images during the initial consultation. This will enable the patient to understand what an ear reshaping procedure can or cannot do for them. The surgeon may also provide testimonials of previous patients to let the patient learn about otoplasty experience from the perspective of other patients.

Ear Plastic Surgery (Otoplasty) Risks and Safety | Beverly HillsEar reshaping surgery, clinically called otoplasty, is a relatively less invasive cosmetic surgery procedure. However, certain risks and complications which are inherent to any surgery will also apply to otoplasty. The decision to have ear surgery is a personal one, and the patient should weigh the potential benefits and risks to make the right choice.

At the time of pre-op consultation, the surgeon will apprise the patient of the potential risks and safety aspects to help them make a well-informed decision. The patient will have to sign consent forms certifying that they have understood the procedure, the alternative treatments available, if any, and the potential risks.

In case of little children receiving otoplasty, their parents or guardians will have to play a proactive role in making the decision. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides ear reshaping surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.

Bleeding (Hematoma)

Bleeding in the wounds may occur in rare situations during otoplasty cosmetic surgery or during the recovery. The surgeon can minimize this risk by carefully determine any underlying medical condition of the patient, and ensuring that they refrain from using blood thinning medications, NSAIDs and certain kinds of herbal supplements and vitamins for a few days before the surgery.

Blood Clotting

Blood clot formation is another rare risk associated with otoplasty. If the patient has a history of clot formation, they will be at a higher risk. The surgeon will review the health records of the patient to identify such issues, and the patient should also volunteer all relevant medical information for their own safety.

Asymmetry

Otoplasty may be performed in one or both ears. In either case, there is a risk of asymmetry. In any case, both ears are never perfectly symmetrical or identical, but they should be natural looking.

Infection

The risk of infection is inherent to any surgery. The surgical venue should have a hygienic and sterile environment. Following the surgery, the patient should avoid exposure of the incision areas to contamination. The surgeon may prescribe antibiotics for a few days to minimize the infection risks after surgery.

Slow Healing

Post-surgical healing may be slow in a few cases and the wound may heal poorly. Smokers are usually at a higher risk of slow healing. Therefore, the surgeon will instruct the patient to stop smoking for a specified period of time prior to the ear reshaping surgery.

Adverse Anesthesia Reaction

General anesthesia may have to be used to perform otoplasty on children, while adults will require local anesthesia and sedation. A few patients may experience a poor reaction to anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist should monitor the patient’s response during the surgery in order to identify any concerns early.

Numbness, skin discoloration, unfavorable scarring, extended swelling, allergy, or possibility of revision surgery are other risks associated with otoplasty. Profound and golden plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other cities and suburbs in this part of The Golden State for otoplasty.

Ear Plastic Surgery (Otoplasty) Procedure Steps | Beverly HillsOtoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to reshape the ears to create a more proportionate and attractive facial appearance. Different surgical techniques may be adopted to perform otoplasty, and the steps involved in the procedure can slightly vary depending on the type of technique used.

At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient about the otoplasty procedure and steps involved. The patient should feel free to ask questions and make a well-considered decision. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides ear surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other cities and neighborhoods across the landscape in this area of the state.

Anesthesia

In most cases, ear reshaping cosmetic surgery will be a relatively less invasive procedure, requiring only a local anesthetic along with sedation for an adult patient. Children will, however, usually require general anesthesia to undergo ear pinning surgery.

General anesthesia will be performed by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist, who will be present in the surgery room throughout the procedure to monitor the patient’s response. Otoplasty procedure will usually be completed in less than two hours.

Incision and Cartilage Reshaping

Following anesthesia, the procedure will begin with the surgeon placing an incision behind the ear. The incision will be located discreetly to keep the subsequent scarring minimally exposed. The incision will allow for the ear cartilage to be exposed so that the surgeon can reshape it correctly.

The surgeon will perform the reshaping of the cartilage in precise and delicate manner to enhance the proportion and symmetry of the ears. Substantial cartilage removal may be involved if the ears are oversized. The surgeon may also excise loose skin through the same incisions.

Ear Repositioning

If the ear is projecting far from the head, the surgeon will reposition it closer to the sides of the head after the reshaping of the cartilage is done. This is called ear pinning. Cartilage sparing and scoring techniques as well as skin removal from the back of the ear will be typically involved in this step. The surgeon will customize the techniques to achieve the desired position and shape of ears in a less invasive way.

Incision Closure

Once the ear reshaping is done, the surgeon will use traditional or removable sutures to close the incisions. The incision area will be temporarily wrapped in bandages. Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for otoplasty.

Outpatient Procedure

The patient will be shifted to a recovery area after the surgery is completed. Once the initial effects of surgery and anesthesia are relieved, the patient may be able return home in a few hours. They should have someone responsible to drive them back home. If the patient is a child, the surgeon may recommend an overnight hospital stay for closer monitoring.

Additional procedure steps in otoplasty may be involved if it is a reconstructive ear surgery to correct a birth defect or repair injuries such as lacerations, burns or infected and torn piercings.

Otoplasty Plastic Surgery (Ear Surgery) Recovery | Beverly HillsRecovery is an essential part of any cosmetic surgery procedure, including otoplasty. The patient should be committed to taking all the required precautions during the recovery phase and allow for complete healing of the incisions.

The surgeon will inform the patient about the estimated downtime, give detailed instructions about post-operative care, and explain about the drains, normal post-surgical symptoms and signs of potential complications.

Patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive otoplasty from board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim.

Immediate Post-Op Phase

Following ear reshaping cosmetic surgery, the patient will have a dressing wrapped around the ears. The heavier bandage will be soon replaced with a lighter dressing after the surgeon reviews the incision areas. The patient should ensure that the dressing stays in its place unless directed otherwise by the surgeon.

The patient will typically be released from the surgical center on the same day of surgery, but they should have someone responsible to drive them back home after the procedure. Mild pain medications may be prescribed for the first few days to keep the patient comfortable.

Recovery Time Frame

The patient should ideally have someone to assist them at home for at least the first 24 hours during the recovery phase. The patient should rest adequately in the first week, but short walks and light activities at home are encouraged in this period to keep the blood flow normal in the incision areas.

The patient should recline for rest, but keep the head in an elevated position in order to reduce discomfort. The head should not rest on the operated ear to avoid throbbing and pain. The surgeon will inform when the dressing may be removed. An antibiotic cream may be prescribed for the incision areas.

The patient will be required to return to the surgeon’s office in about one week after the surgery. Sutures and drains will be removed during this appointment. Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other cities in Southern California for .

Although recovery process is unique to an individual patient, most patients can expect to return to their normal routine or go back to work in about one week. Final results will begin showing in two weeks, but small improvements to the ears can continue to develop for up to one year.

Sustainability of Results

Patients are required to refrain from smoking and taking certain medications such as blood thinners for several days before and after the ear surgery. This will mitigate the risk of slow healing and help ensure complete recovery. Results from otoplasty typically last for a lifetime, barring any incidents which may affect the shape or proportion of the ears.

Patients should maintain a relationship with the plastic surgeon, and return to their office at prescribed times for follow up and evaluation. If the patient notices any abnormal changes in the ears or other symptoms, they should promptly contact the surgeon.
