Uneven Breasts

Uneven BreastsUneven Breasts

Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica

Although uneven breasts are the rule rather than the exception, asymmetrical breasts can cause frustration when shopping for properly fitting bras and clothing as well as lead to insecurity and depression about your appearance.

While there is no way to make your breasts identical, there are options for giving your breasts a more proportionate look and feel. Because each of your breasts is as individual as you, the procedure or procedures necessary to correct uneven breasts depends on your specific condition and anatomy. Your comprehensive consultation with experienced Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim can help you set realistic goals and develop a plan to give your breasts the symmetrical appearance you desire.

Uneven Breasts: Setting and Communicating Goals

One of the keys to any successful cosmetic surgery is communicating with your surgeon and setting realistic goals. The first thing to remember is that while Dr. Kim has helped numerous women in the Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and Santa Monica areas achieve more symmetrical breasts, your breasts will never be perfectly identical.

When considering goals for correcting your uneven breasts, think about whether you like the particular size and shape of one of your breasts. If not, look at pictures and/or case studies to develop a general idea of how you ultimately want your breasts to look; this can be a useful tool for communicating with Dr. Kim what volume, size and shape you will be comfortable with while helping you set achievable goals.

The treatment options available to you will depend largely on the specifics of your breasts, including the size and position of your breasts, the shape and diameter of your areolas, and the position of your nipples.

Options for Correcting Uneven Breasts

When it comes to treating uneven breast size, the options are elementally simple: make your small breast larger or your large breast smaller. How to accomplish this, however, depends on a number of factors including your personal preferences, the specifics of your condition, your body type and your overall health.

Uneven breasts can be due to unbalanced breast position, varying breast size or both. Uneven breast position can often be corrected with a breast lift on one or both breasts with or without the use of breast implants. Uneven breast size may be treated with a breast reduction of the larger breast or a breast augmentation of the smaller breast.

Before agreeing on the specifics of your treatment plan for uneven breasts, Dr. Kim will conduct a thorough exam that includes accurate measurements of your nipple and areola positions, as well as measuring and comparing the individual size of each breast.

If your asymmetry is minor and consists of a single sagging breast, a breast lift alone may be enough to achieve your goal of evenly contoured breasts. A breast lift, or mastopexy, includes removing excess skin around your breast, tightening loose skin and repositioning your nipple to a higher location in a way that aligns with your other breast.

Depending on the goals you have for your breast size and appearance, Dr. Kim may recommend breast augmentation or breast reduction either alone or in conjunction with a breast lift.

If you would like to enhance your smaller breast to more closely resemble your larger breast, a breast augmentation with a saline or silicone breast implant may provide proportionate volume and contour.

On the flip side, if you want your larger breast to align more closely with your smaller breast, a breast reduction procedure might be the answer. A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin from the breast; as with a breast lift, the nipple and areola are repositioned, and the areola may also be reduced in size or reshaped.
