He provides this surgery in a customized manner to fit in with the unique facial features and ethnicity of a patient.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a plastic surgery designed to improve the shape and size of the nose to make it more proportionate and desirable. The surgery may be performed for aesthetic or functional purposes, as per the circumstances of a case. Rhinoplasty is an important surgery because the nose is a central focal point of the face, which can impact the facial profile in a major way.

Patients in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, or and other sister cities in southern California who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose may consult with Dr. Eugene Kim, who is a trained plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty. Dr. Kim will carefully try to understand the unique needs of a patient and then develop an appropriate rhinoplasty treatment plan to achieve results that meet or exceed the patient’s expectations.

Common Aesthetic Problems of the Nose

A lot of people are unhappy about the shape or size of their nose, and how it affects their overall facial appearance. Some of the common aesthetic complaints about the shape and size of the nose are as follows:

  • Disproportionately big
  • Disproportionately small
  • Large or flat nasal tip
  • Small or sharp nasal tip
  • Dip, hump or bump in the nasal bridge
  • Shallow slope in the bridge
  • Steep slope in the bridge
  • Nostrils are too large
  • Nostrils cause obstruction in breathing
  • Nose is too wide or too narrow
  • Nose is crooked or broken
  • Nose is upturned or downturned

Patients who suffer from one or more of the above-listed issues and are dissatisfied with the condition may consult with a cosmetic surgeon who is experienced in rhinoplasty procedure.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty may be performed as an open or closed nasal surgery. Closed rhinoplasty procedure is suited only in cases where the patient needs minimal improvements in the nose appearance. The advantage with closed rhinoplasty is that it does not involve any external incision and does not leave a visible scar. However, a majority of patients are in need of a significant improvement in the appearance of the nose. These improvements can be achieved with an open rhinoplasty.

Open rhinoplasty procedure begins with a tiny incision that is made in the columella or the narrow strip of skin that separates the nostrils. The surgeon can view the internal structure of the nose through the incision and correct the aesthetic or function concerns of the nose. Healing in case of open rhinoplasty is usually very good, and the patient will be left with a very subtle and well-hidden scar.

Patients who suffer from a disproportionately smaller nose may need nasal augmentation surgery. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Kim performs this surgery for patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, CA and adjoining areas, using their own tissue. This tissue may be the soft cartilage from the ear or another such area. The advantage with this technique instead of artificial implants is that the risk of extrusion and infection is reduced. Once the nose is reshaped, the surgeon will replace the skin over the nose and close the incision.

Recovery

The patient may experience minor pain and discomfort following a rhinoplasty. The surgeon will usually prescribe pain relieving medications for a few days. The nose will be bandaged after the surgery, and splints may be set in the nose to maintain the airways. An external splint may also be used to allow the healing and shaping to take place in the best possible way.

Swelling and bruising will fade away within a few days and full results of the procedure will be visible gradually. Most patients can return to work within a week when the sutures and splints are removed. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks, and during this period the patient should avoid crowded places to minimize the chances of nose injury.

Dr. Kim is also extensively experienced as a cosmetic surgeon to perform ethnic rhinoplasty on patients of ethnic descent such as Korean, Chinese, and other Asians.
