Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) OverviewDr. Eugene Kim is a board certified plastic surgeon providing advanced and innovative treatments to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas. He is an expert for various breast surgery procedures, including male breast reduction surgery or gynecomastia.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the clinical name for male breast enlargement. This is a medical condition that can cause not just physical discomfort but also psychological and social hurdles for a patient. One of the challenges with this condition is that the patient may feel embarrassed about enlarged breasts, and may try to hide or ignore the problem rather than visiting an experienced cosmetic surgeon for treatment. The condition may occur in one or both breasts in a male, and the patients typically suffer from some degree of emotional distress.

Causes

Dr. Kim receives patients suffering from gynecomastia in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities. One of his first goals is to determine the specific cause of the condition in a particular patient so that the treatment approach may be followed appropriately. Some of the common causes of this condition include the following:

  • Use of certain types of steroids or other drugs.
  • Prolonged alcohol use.
  • Excessive weight gain.
  • Certain types of diseases or cancers.
  • Genetic factors.

Fantastic Candidates

An experienced plastic surgeon will evaluate the general health condition, breast anatomy, and other factors to determine whether a patient is an incredible candidate for breast reduction surgery. The surgeon will determine whether the patient actually has excess breast tissue that would necessitate surgical removal. If the individual is merely having a minor amount of excess fat and loose skin in the breast area, weight loss techniques, dieting and pectoral exercises may be recommended at first.

The surgeon will also ensure that the patient does not have a pre-existing condition that could pose risk during surgery. The patient should have a positive outlook, clear goals, and realistic expectations. If the patient is a smoker, he should be prepared to stop smoking several weeks before and after the surgery.

Procedure

The procedure may be performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on the individual case. The cosmetic surgeon may decide on liposuction or excision or a combination of the two to remove excess breast tissue. The procedure begins with the surgeon placing a discreet incision around the areola and nipple area to keep the scarring inconspicuous.

Fat cells may be removed using a cannula, in case liposuction is required as a part of the procedure. Hard grandular tissue may be removed with a scalpel. Once the excess fat tissue and skin has been removed, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures or skin adhesives.

Recovery

The patient is likely to experience some bruising and swelling initially. Most patients can go back to work within a week, but strenuous physical activities should be avoided for several weeks. Tight, firm, and enhanced masculine appearance of breasts will be visible as the swelling and bruising resolve.
