The US alone, sees over 40,000 liposuction surgeries performed every year. The takers for this surgery are usually individuals who have a consistent body weight, but wish to get rid of undesirable fat in certain body parts. Through liposuction, they can enhance their body shape to the desired contour. The areas that are commonly contoured through a liposuction are abdomen, buttocks, back, hips, thighs, inner knees, chest and upper arms. It can also be used to treat medical conditions like gynecomastia, lipomas(fatty tumors) and lipodystrophy syndrome. For the skin to mold itself neatly into the desired contours, a candidate whose skin has good elasticity and skin tone is preferred.

Before liposuction surgery

The cosmetic surgeon will ask the patient to undergo basic health tests to see if he/she is fit for a liposuction surgery. The patient may be asked to stay off anti-inflammatory medication for two weeks before the procedure. Women may be asked to stop taking contraceptives too.

The cosmetic surgeon will make markings on the patient, to indicate the areas where the procedure will be performed. Sometimes, photos are taken to see the before and after effects of the surgery. A liposuction can last anywhere between one and four hours. The patient is sedated with anesthesia before the procedure begins.

During liposuction surgery

During liposuction, the fat cells are broken down and removed from the body by applying a powerful vacuum to a hollow tube called cannula. The method used while breaking down the fat cells can vary from one liposuction procedure to the other. In wet and tumescent liposuction methods, a liquid is infused into the fatty area to loosen the cells. In ultrasound liposuction, ultrasound vibrations are used to energize the cannula and liquify the fat cells. Laser- assisted lipo is one of the least invasive of the lot, as it uses a microcanula that is energized with a laser, to thermally break down the fat cells. Sometimes, the removed fat is used as a filler in other body parts to reduce wrinkles or enhance its shape. The plastic surgeon may not close the incisions for a while, so the fluid can be completely drained out.

Post-surgery

While patients who are administered local anesthesia can leave the hospital after the procedure, those who are given general anesthesia usually stay back in the hospital for a night. To reduce bruising and inflammation, the plastic surgeon fits the patient with bandages or a compression garment. The pateint is expected to keep it on for the coming few weeks. Patients may also be asked to take antibiotics after the procedure. If the inflammation and pain, post-surgery is severe, the plastic surgeon may prescribe painkillers.

During the follow-up visit, the doctor removes the stitches. While the patient may feel a mild numbness in the operated area for a brief period, the condition will improve over the next few weeks. After-liposuction results can be fully appreciated once the inflammation subsides. The patient is advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle post-surgery, so as to keep any fat cells under check.
