Facelift Surgery Overview

In today’s world, everybody is becoming extremely conscious about their physical appearance and personality. There is a desire to look youthful among those aging and experiencing changes in their body. The face of a person probably shows the first signs of aging in almost all individuals. In comparison to men, women are more aware about the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation etc. on their face. They are constantly on the lookout for anti-aging creams and other beauty products as well as supplements to delay the process of aging.

What is a facelift?

A facelift is also known as rhytidectomy and is a cosmetic surgical procedure to make the face look more youthful. This is done by removing wrinkles and extra facial skin and may also involve tightening of the tissues beneath the facial skin. Facelifts are quite often combined with other surgical procedures performed on the eyelids, eyebrows or cheeks to give a more youthful appearance.

Dr. Eugene Kim is a renowned plastic surgeon offering his services around Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica and West Hollywood, CA. He believes that facelift is not just a cosmetic surgery but also requires the surgeon to combine both artistry and skill for performing it successfully. The procedure itself is customized to meet the varying needs of individual patients but the goal for each patient remains the same- getting a youthful appearance.

Types of facelifts

There are several types of facelift techniques and options available to the patients today. A meeting with the cosmetic surgeon discussing your requirements will enable you to make a decision regarding which procedure is most suitable for you. Some of the commonly performed facelifts include the following:

  • Cutaneous facelift (Skin only): This type of facelift works on the lower part of the face and neck. An incision is made in the hairline above the ear and the skin is dissected by the cosmetic surgeon so as to remove excess skin, fat and muscle. The skin is then stretched back and the incision is sealed. It is considered to be the oldest type of facelift technique.
  • Traditional facelift: The entire procedure remains almost the same as in the cutaneous facelift, however this time the surgeon lifts and repositions the muscle layer using sutures. The longevity of this facelift procedure is ensured with the muscle tightening technique.
  • Temporal facelift: The temporal facelift focuses on the eyebrow area of the patient. Those with drooping eyebrows can get an eyebrow lift with this procedure.

According to Dr. Kim, most patients prefer a full facelift as it gives results for the neck and lower as well as middle face.

Recovery procedure

Patients usually experience minimum discomfort and pain. Tenderness can be relieved using medications. Swelling may last for a couple of days in most patients. A one week recovery time is estimated after surgery but normal routine activities can be undertaken one day after the surgery. Following the doctor’s instructions regarding washing the face and bathing as well as keeping the incisions and bandages dry is very important.
