Dermabrasion is a time-tested non-surgical procedure for facial skin rejuvenation. The treatment involves a unique technique that uses specialized rotating instruments to gently remove the topmost layers of skin to mitigate facial scars and aging signs. You can choose dermabrasion if you are bothered by the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, coarse skin texture, uneven tone, and sun damaged skin.
Dermabrasion is an outpatient procedure, and it may be performed at your surgeon’s office or a qualified medical spa. You can return home the same day after the treatment. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides dermabrasion skin rejuvenation procedure to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.
While dermabrasion is mostly performed using only local anesthesia and mild sedation, in exceptional cases the surgeon may recommend general anesthesia if the treatment is extensive or involves additional procedures. Following anesthesia, a trained assistant on your surgeon’s team will stretch your skin and hold it firmly. The treatment specialist will then use a special dermabrader device in a controlled manner over the stretched skin.
The rough surface of the device will gently remove the outermost layers of old skin and dead skin cells. If the treatment involves large patches of skin, your surgeon may use a circular dermabrader. In narrow skin sites, such as the corners of your mouth, a small tipped dermabrader device may be used.
When the treatment session is over, your surgeon will cover the treated facial sites with a moist dressing. The surgeon’s staff will teach you how to change the dressing on your own at home. Or, you can visit the next day to the surgeon’s office for a change of dressing.
Before you leave your surgeon’s office, they will provide you detailed instructions for recovery. You will have to avoid smoking or using NSAIDs and blood thinners for a few days. Your surgeon will guide you about when you can use cosmetic skin care products and until when to avoid alcohol based products.
Pinkness in the treated skin sites will remain visible for a few weeks. In the initial healing phase, some degree of swelling and a tingling or burning sensation may be experienced. Your surgeon may prescribe mild pain medications to keep you comfortable during early recovery. You can probably return to your normal routine activities in five to six days after the treatment. Continue to avoid sun exposure in the treated areas for several months.
Dermabrasion works on the exfoliation principle to rejuvenate your skin. It will actively eliminate damaged or dead outer skin cells to reveal a smooth, supple and youthful skin appearance underneath. You can achieve significant improvement or complete resolution of the following skin conditions with dermabrasion:
- Minor wrinkles and fine lines
- Age spots
- Sun damaged skin
- Acne scars
- Rough skin texture
- Uneven skin tone
- Pre-malignant patches on the skin
- Injury or surgery scars
- Thick or red nose skin (rhinophyma)
