What are Risks From Tummy Tuck Surgery?

What are Risks From Tummy Tuck Surgery?Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck surgery, seeks to surgically reduce excess fat and skin from the abdomen. This procedure offers powerful rejuvenation and is relatively safe, but like any surgery, entails some risk. Your surgeon will inform you of all side effects, risks and your recovery process during your initial consultation. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides tummy tuck surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.

Procedure

Tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia. During your surgery, your surgeon will make an incision to remove fat between the belly button and pubic area. The abdominal muscles are tightened with sutures, and the incision is stitched closed along the bikini line. The belly button will be repositioned in a natural area. Depending on the extent of your procedure, the surgery typically takes about two to three hours.

Risks

As with any surgery, there are always possible risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss risks and how they are mitigated during your consultation. It is important that you address any concerns you may have with your surgeon so you can make an informed decision to undergo surgery.

Risks include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Unfavorable results
  • Fluid accumulation, or seroma
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Unfavorable scarring

Recovery

After surgery, you may have small drain tubes along the incision site for several days to help drain excess fluids. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to manage your drains and care for your scar, and you will need to go to your post-op appointments. You’ll experience bruising and swelling, and may be prescribed pain medication. You will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks following surgery to help provide support for your abdomen while you heal. Expect to take a least a few weeks off of work, and avoid any strenuous activities to avoid reopening your wound. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides tummy tuck surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.
