Types of Liposuction

Types of LiposuctionVarious liposuction techniques are available to plastic surgeons today. The primary difference between each liposuction cosmetic surgery technique is the technology they use to enable fat removal.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides liposuction to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is typically undertaken as an outpatient procedure. During this procedure, the patient is usually under only local anesthesia and sedation. The time taken for the surgery may differ on the basis of the extent of fat removal, surgical technique used, and the number of fat reduction areas targeted.

At the outset of the procedure, the surgeon will place a small incision in a pre-determined location. They will then insert a thin cannula through this incision to access the deeper layers of fat.

The surgeon will delicately maneuver the cannula to dislodge the fat cells. When the fat cells come loose, they will use a vacuum pump or syringe attached to the outer end of the cannula to suction them out.

Patients can expect some blood and fluid loss during the cosmetic surgery. These fluids will be restored with IV infusions during and right after the procedure.

Laser Assisted Liposuction (Smart Lipo)

Smart Lipo refers to a proven laser-assisted lipolysis system. This procedure offers both skin tightening and fat reduction in a minimally invasive way.

Smart Lipo is meant to tighten underlying loose tissue and dislodge undesirable fat cells using precise laser energy. Today many plastic surgeons are using this technology as an ideal supplement to liposuction. The primary aim is to decrease the treatment’s invasiveness and attain more effective outcomes.

Liposuction is meant to remove localized fat deposits from the face and body. Smart Lipo can be helpful in this process as a laser-assisted procedure that will coagulate the targeted blood vessels in a safe manner and attain the desired results with less bleeding and bruising than liposuction alone.

Why Choose Smart Lipo?

Smart Lipo provides patients with the following benefits:

  • It is a minimally invasive procedure
  • It has been proven safe in several clinical studies
  • It removes precise pockets of undesirable fat
  • It accomplishes skin tightening by enhancing the coagulation of blood vessels.
  • It creates less bruising and bleeding in comparison to liposuction by itself
  • Much less downtime compared to a typical surgical procedure
  • A reduction in pain and trauma for the patient
  • Highly fibrous sites can be treated more effectively
  • Offers predictable, consistent, and reproducible outcomes

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction

This technique uses ultrasound energy to disintegrate fatty tissue and loosen it from the body. This allows for the ready removal of significant amounts of fat with a shorter surgery. The variations of this procedure include VASER Liposelection.

Suction Assisted Liposuction

In suction-assisted liposuction, the surgeon will use a vacuum-like device to eliminate fat. Power-assisted liposuction is also a similar technique that involves the use of a tool that enhances the movement of the cannula used to excise fat.

It is important for patients to understand that their liposuction outcomes will ultimately depend on the skill of their plastic surgeon rather than the technique used. Therefore, patients should spend time researching and choosing a highly skilled, board-certified surgeon, who will always consider patient safety to be their foremost priority.
