Keller Funnel
The Keller Funnel is a ground-breaking instrument that allows for the natural look-and-feel of silicone breast implants with the surgical benefits of saline implants. Many patients seeking breast augmentation prefer silicone implants over saline, simply because silicone implants look, feel, and act more like natural breast tissue. Traditionally, silicone implants required larger incisions and more forceful insertion than saline implants, resulting in more extensive scarring, more post-operative bruising, and greater risk of both short- and long-term complications. The Keller Funnel eliminates these disadvantages. This simple, highly-effective tool allows for shorter incisions, more placement choices, “no-touch” placement to minimize risk of infection, and less trauma on natural tissue to reduce bruising and improve healing time.
Dr. Kim is a double-board-certified plastic surgeon whose extensive experience conducting breast augmentations and breast reconstructions has led him to recommend the use of silicone implants for most of his patients. By utilizing the most up-to-date techniques and technologies, such as the Keller Funnel, Dr. Kim will ensure that his patients achieve the most natural-looking, beautiful results possible.
What is the Keller Funnel and How Does it Work?
The Keller Funnel is a soft nylon, cone-shaped instrument (literally, a funnel) through which Dr. Kim can deliver silicone implants into the exact placement site. Prior to the development of the Keller Funnel, silicone implants had to be pushed by hand through a large incision into the correct placement site, leading to trauma on the implant and the breast tissue and potentially leading to future placement problems. Use of the Keller Funnel minimizes these potential problems.
With the Keller Funnel, surgeons make small incisions right at the correct placement site. The interior of the Funnel is coated with LubriLAST, an extremely safe, hydrophilic coating that becomes very slippery when exposed to a saline or sterile solution. The narrow end of the funnel is placed inside the incision, and once the implant is placed in the wide end of the Funnel, it can be gently and easily squeezed through the Funnel into the appropriate place in the breast pocket. The Funnel can be used with both smooth and textured silicone implants, and with any placement site (including transaxial, periareolar, and mammary fold insertion procedures).
Dr. Eugene Kim: Breast Augmentation with the Keller Funnel
Use of the Keller Funnel provides several important benefits over traditional techniques:
· Smaller incision—leading to less scarring and improved healing time
· Sterile tip of the funnel is placed inside the incision—because the surgeon does not have to touch either the placement site or the implant, the risk of infection is minimizes
· Allows the implant to be gently moved into the correct position, instead of being pushed through by hand—reduces trauma to the natural breast tissue, improves healing time, and decreases bruising and post-operative discomfort
· Reduces trauma on the implant—potentially decreases the chances of capsular contracture and other long-term complications
