Breast Lift Incision Options

Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica

If you have sagging breasts, a breast lift restores a firmer, rounder appearance. The incision used in this procedure is based on your breasts and your preferences. Plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim recommends breast lift incisions that will best accomplish removal of excess skin, reshaping of breast tissue, and lifting of the areola and nipple.

Breast Lift Incision Locations

Depending on certain characteristics of your breasts, Dr. Kim may recommend one of the three basic breast lift incisions for your procedure. These incisions are:

  • An incision around the areola, with another incision from the bottom of the areola down to the crease of the breast, and a third incision extending horizontally along the crease of the breast. This option is sometimes called the “anchor” incision, because it somewhat resembles the appearance of a boating anchor.
  • An incision around the areola, with another incision from the bottom of the areola down to the crease of the breast. This option is sometimes called the “lollipop” incision, because it looks similar to a lollipop shape.
  • Two circular incisions around the areola.

After Dr. Kim creates the incision, he removes excess, sagging skin and lifts the nipple and areola to a higher position. If your areolas have become stretched and enlarged, their size may be reduced by removing some of the areola tissue. The breast tissue beneath your skin is reshaped, and the skin sutured to conform to the new breast shape.

How an Incision Location is Chosen

You and Dr. Kim discuss all of your breast lift options prior to the procedure. We want to fulfill your goals for breast appearance, and your procedure is planned with your input and preferences in mind.

When discussing the right breast lift incision for you, Dr. Kim may assess:

  • Your preferences
  • Degree of breast sagginess
  • Breast size
  • Breast shape
  • Areola size

Although the incisions leave scars, those scars should become lighter and flatter about a year after your surgery. Dr. Kim can tell you more about how these incisions will affect the final appearance of your breasts.
