Chin Augmentation Plastic Surgery Procedure Steps

Chin Augmentation Plastic Surgery Procedure StepsChin augmentation cosmetic surgery procedure is designed to add proportion to the chin and provide balance to the facial features. The surgery typically involves placement of synthetic chin implants to make a recessive chin appear more substantive. At the time of pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain the steps involved in the surgical procedure.

Once the patient knows what the chin augmentation procedure entails, they will often feel more reassured and confident about the surgery. Fantastic and board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides chin augmentation to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities and cities in this part of the country.

Surgical Markings

The surgeon will follow a customized chin augmentation cosmetic surgery plan that is pre-determined in consultation with the patient. Although the procedure for chin implants follows a similar pattern in all cases, minor changes in technique can be there in specific situations.

As a first step, the surgeon will create surgical markings on the chin to ensure that implant placement is made accurately, and to indicate location of underlying structures that must be avoided during the surgery.

Administering of Anesthesia

The patient will be placed in a supine (face up) position on the operating table inside the surgery room. General anesthesia along with a local anesthetic is usually administered in case of chin augmentation surgery. However, sometimes local anesthesia with IV sedation may be used.

General anesthesia will be performed by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist. They will usually remain present in the surgery room throughout the procedure to monitor the patient’s response.

Creating the Incisions

Once the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon will create a small incision under the chin or inside of the mouth between the gum and lower lip. An external incision will leave a small scar, but if the incision is placed inside the mouth, it will result in no visible scarring.

However, incisions inside the mouth are more likely to introduce bacteria into the body. Even in case of external incisions, a skilled surgeon will place them discreetly in natural creases where the scar will be inconspicuous and will heal well.

Placing the Chin Implant

Through the incision, the surgeon will create a pocket in the facial tissue to insert the chin implant. The implant will be gently inserted through the incision with a sterilized clamp, and will be positioned in front of the jawbone. The surgeon will then assess its aesthetic appearance for correct balance with other facial features.

If any adjustments or modifications to the implant are necessary, these will done at this stage to ensure the desired look is achieved. Once this is done, the surgeon will carefully suture the implant into place.

Wound Closure

The incisions will be closed with traditional or dissolvable sutures once the implant placement is completed. It takes about 10 days for the sutures to dissolve or to be removed. The incision sites will be covered with bandages initially to support healing.
